Here’s a list of programming/game creation books I’ve read that I reccommend.

Beginning C++ Game Programming - This is where it all started for me.  I suggest starting with this book as it provides practical examples of all your C++ basics, and once you have seen them in this light, I suggest getting something a bit deeper.

Sam’s Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days - Well I lied before, this is where it first started, but a lot of it didn’t sink in the first time through.  I went and read “Beginning C++ Game Programming” and then came back to this book, and it made a lot more sense.  Great for solidifying your C++ basics.

Core Techniques and Algorithms in Game Programming - This book is a great introduction into various techniques used in creating games.  I wouldn’t call it a final word on the best techniques, but it provides you with the tools required to go out and find what you need.

Programming Game AI by Example - A solid look into AI techniques, with a good set of example projects.  

Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture  - If you ever need inspiration to make games, this is the book to read.  The story of the two Johns, starting one of the biggest and most influential game studios in history.  Well worth a read.
